Poetry Extravaganza

Review of Poetry Extravaganza
by Andrew Burke

The final event of National Poetry Week 2008 happened on Sunday 7 September, a Poetry Extravaganza, so designated by the Peter Cowan Writers Centre committee before we decided what to do with the afternoon.

I invited the centre’s Patron, Prof Andrew Taylor, to read for us as one of Australia’s most noted poets. I also invited Andrew Lansdown and Hal Colebatch, both widely published and experienced authors. Sarah French and Meg McKinley were also invited, two young upcoming female poets, but for various reasons couldn’t attend.

Members from the Centre also read, contributing to a wide variety of styles and themes. As it was a members meeting as well, there was a crowd of around twenty. A couple of these were from the community and may become members.

This may not sound many to other more centralised city centres, but for a Sunday – and Father’s Day at that – it was a healthy number for this lively centre in the rapidly-growing northern corridor of Perth.
