Poetry Quiz Night - Kununurra

Review of Kununurra Poetry Event
by Wendy Carter

"On Sunday 7th September, a small but enthusiastic group of poetry lovers gathered in the Kununurra Historical Society Display Centre to celebrate National Poetry Week 2008.

All enjoyed a fun, relaxed evening of poetry, including a visitor from Perth, a visitor from Adelaide and one local who drove the 100 kms from Wyndham & then 100 kms back again that night because he was so keen to take part.

We followed the rather odd topics of National Poetry Week which brought about some good variations and lateral thinking around those themes as well as some extra subjects from poetry in history.

The best rendition was by Bruce Lee from Adelaide spruiking a Bob Magor poem about a bloke in Derby who jumped off the jetty & got stuck in the mud! Apologies as I don't know the title. But the good thing about sharing poetry is that I am now going to look out for one of Bob's books to read some more of his poetry."

This week, 29th August - 7th September, is the seventh National Poetry Week. On Sunday 7th September the Kununurra Historical Society are hosting a poetry evening to celebrate. This will be a fun quiz night type poetry evening where you are encouraged to bring your poetry books along or borrow some from the library and join in. The national themes are "Cast, suspect, friend, shop, screen, I eye, save & space". The intention is to have an interactive evening reading poetry based on these themes and on historical eras. Just to give you a head start here is an example of a poem written during the Second World War which is up at the Nackeroos Memorial at the Timber Creek Look-out:-

Somewhere in Australia
Somewhere in Australia where the sun is like a curse
And then each day is followed by another slightly worse
And the brick red dust blows thicker than the shifting desert sand
And the men all dream & wish for fairer cooler land

Somewhere in Australia where the mail is always late
And a Xmas card in April is considered up to date
And you never get a payday but you never pay the rent
And you never miss the money 'cos you'd never get it spent

Somewhere in Australia where the ants & lizards play
& a hundred fresh mosquitoes reinforce the ones you slay
So take me back to good old Sydney where I can hear the tramway bell
For this God forsaken place is just a substitute for hell

All will be explained on the night. All you need to do is be at the Kununurra Historical Society Display Centre in Coolibah Drive, Kununurra (opposite the exit from the Country Club) from 6 - 9pm. All you need to bring is $5 each for the Kununurra Historical Society, a plate of finger food to share, drinks & your poetry or poetry books. If you are visiting town & do not have plates or friends come along anyway - everyone welcome, children included. Any enquiries ring Wendy Carter on 9168 3724 or 0428 823 489. Tea & coffee provided.
