Walking on Water

Walking on Water

Review
by Flora Smith

WOW on Monday 1 September was a fun place to be, with wine and tasty nibbles provided by the ever-hospitable host Jane Cornes and helpers Flora Smith and Janet Jackson. Janet gave us poetry mixed with guitar and songs, before the ‘gang of five’ gave us a quick taste of what to expect from their planned anthology Amber Contains the Sun. These five poets  -  namely Vivienne Glance, Sally Clarke, Flora Smith, Carol Millner and Chris Konrad  -  met at the FAWWA Mentorship program in 2007 and are proof positive that mentoring produces excellent results.

After an interval of chatting and networking, we enjoyed the delights of Annamaria Weldon and Kevin Gillam. Anna read her prize-winning entry from the Creatrix Poetry Competition, as well as some new work and some old favourites from her recently-published volume ‘The Roof Milkers’. Kevin Gillam entranced us with wonderful poems for voice and cello, like the haunting ‘New Norcia’. An Open Mic. before and after gave us many talented readings from regular WOW-ers like Kay Cairns, to newer voices of the callibre of Annie Otness, winner of a Commendation Certificate in the recent C.J. Dennis Awards. Well done Annie !
